President Claudia Sheinbaum confirms the recovery of $5.8 million from the corruption scheme of Genaro Garcia Luna.
The Mexican government has successfully recovered $5.8 million from the corruption scheme involving Genaro Garcia Luna, the former Secretary of Public Security. The funds were obtained through a civil demand in a Florida court, resulting from the sale of 12 properties owned by the Weinberg family, which served as front companies for Garcia Luna's illicit business operations. President Claudia Sheinbaum clarified that while the $5.8 million represents the first of several recovered assets, the total estimated fraud from Garcia Luna's network of overpriced contracts and shell companies amounts to $727 million. Sheinbaum explained that the Financial Intelligence Unit identified these figures as the total size of the corruption, including instances where the government paid for services that were never fully delivered. The administration announced that the recovered $5.8 million will be allocated to schools in the Montane of Guerrero region, a high-poverty area. The Financial Intelligence Unit noted that the liquidation of additional assets is still pending to further replenish the Mexican treasury.
