Donald Tusk inspects the first completed section of Poland's East Shield defense system

Poland has begun constructing the East Shield, a defensive barrier along its eastern border with Russia and Belarus. Prime Minister Donald Tusk inspected the first completed section in November 2024, describing the project as a "truly an investment in peace" intended to deter potential aggressors. The project, which aims to secure the 210-kilometer border with Russia, involves constructing fortifications, equipment depots, and anti-drone installations. To support the project, Poland has allocated approximately 10 billion euros to the defense system. German sappers have been assisting in the construction, installing concrete "hedgehogs" and trenches to impede enemy tanks. While the project strengthens ties with Germany, some conservative-nationalist opposition in Poland remains wary of German involvement due to historical memories of World War II. The administration announced that Poland is prepared to close all eastern border crossings within 14 days if necessary. The system is designed to be a multi-layered defense, including the mines and warehouses that will house missiles with a long range.
