Friedrich Merz Warns of Growing Threats as Germany Investigates Potential Russian Sabotage at Leipzig Airport

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz warned that those responsible for hostile acts against Germany, including a recent drone incident at Leipzig/Halle Airport, will pay a price. The incident occurred on August 4, when an explosives-laden drone was discovered near Ukrainian cargo aircraft. While the device failed to explode due to a faulty detonator, investigators believe the plot was designed to delay shipments to Ukraine and signal a warning to Germany regarding its support for the Ukrainian war effort. U.S. intelligence sources suggest the drone bore the hallmarks of Russia's Military Intelligence Directorate, though Moscow has denied involvement. The discovery led to a temporary shutdown of the airport, a major cargo hub used by the U.S. military and NATO allies. German agencies are working intensively on the case, with a third drone and traces of military explosive hexogen found nearby on August 14. Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated that Germany is increasingly becoming a target for hybrid warfare and vowed to stay the course in supporting Ukraine to force peace talks.
