Friedrich Merz confirms German government is investigating the source of drone attacks on Leipzig airport.
German investigators have uncovered a third drone and suspected military explosives linked to an attempted sabotage of the Leipzig airport. The drone was discovered in Kabelsketal, west of the airport, along with approximately 50 grams of a substance suspected to be the military explosive hexogen. Friedrich Merz stated that the government is working intensively with security authorities to identify the perpetrators. While intelligence sources suspect Russian involvement, Moscow has denied the responsibility. The attempted attack occurred on August 4, during which a drone carrying explosives was found near a Ukrainian Antonov cargo plane. A second drone allegedly collided with a DHL cargo plane, forcing it to divert to Marseille. The Leipzig airport serves as a critical cargo and military logistics hub for NATO and Ukraine's Antonov Airlines. If the drones had detonated, they could have caused significant property damage and casualties. The German government is currently awaiting further findings from the prosecutor general's office to determine the exact nature of the attack.
