Dilian Francisca Toro Announces Demolition of 18 Structures to Recover From Earthquake Damage

The administration announced a plan to demolish 18 structures, including 17 churches and one municipality office, to mitigate risks from the August 10 earthquake. Dilian Francisca Toro, the governor of the Cauca Valley, stated that specialized personnel and machinery from 15 municipalities will be deployed to remove severely damaged domes and buildings that threaten nearby commerce. In Roldanillo, the administration will install containers to create a temporary 'outdoor' commercial space while the mayor's office is demolished. This strategy aims to preserve nearly 2,000 jobs during the reconstruction process. The demolition schedule covers several municipalities, including Palmira, Yumbo, and San Pedro. The earthquake left 65,000 homes damaged and 7,000 completely collapsed across the region. While many religious sites remain closed, communities have adapted by holding celebrations in parks and plazas. Additionally, the administration is coordinating with indigenous and black communities to conduct real-time censuses to ensure all affected families are registered for repairs.
