Dilian Francisca Toro Leads Reconstruction Efforts in Valle del Cauca Following Devastating Earthquake

The administration announced that reconstruction and recovery efforts are underway in Valle del Cauca following a magnitude 7.4 earthquake on August 10. Governor Dilian Francisca Toro stated that the recovery process focuses on three primary lines of work: rebuilding, repairing, and reanimating the affected families. The administration emphasized that the process includes psychological support for victims to ensure emotional well-being alongside physical reconstruction. Preliminary reports from the Secretariat for Risk Management indicate the earthquake left 189 people dead and 3,555 injured. Infrastructure damage is extensive, with 45,098 homes damaged and 9,959 homes destroyed. Significant impacts are concentrated in Cali, El Cairo, Roldanillo, Buenaventura, Sevilla, and Calima El Darién. El Cairo is particularly critical, with approximately 80% of its urban zone destroyed. The administration has deployed over 106 teams and yellow machinery to repair 37 roads and 11 bridges. Additionally, 837 schools and 74 hospitals were affected, while 20 temporary shelters have been established to house 527 displaced residents.
