Google DeepMind and Google Research release WeatherNext 3, a new artificial intelligence model for high-resolution global weather forecasting.

It improves upon its predecessor by featuring 2.4 times more parameters and providing hourly forecasts instead of the standard six-hour intervals. WeatherNext 3 was tested on the Operational WeatherBench utility and was found to be more accurate than leading deep-learning models from Microsoft, Nvidia, and the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasting. It also outperformed traditional forecasts from the U.S. National Weather Service and the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasting. The model incorporates raw observations from weather satellites in real time. It also targets specific weather data stations to provide more granular predictions. Google stated that WeatherNext 3 will be integrated into Google Maps, Gemini, and search results. The model is expected to be useful for renewable energy projects and improving crop yields in developing countries.
