Google invests 13 billion euros in Finnish AI infrastructure and signs first nuclear power deal
Google announced a 13 billion euro investment in Finland's AI infrastructure, marking the company's largest single investment in Europe. The capital will be deployed through 2028 to fund three new data centers in Kajaani, Muhos, and Vaala, as well as the expansion of an existing facility in Hamina. As part of this investment, Google signed a 22-year power purchase agreement with the Finnish energy company Fortum. This deal includes a life extension for the Loviisa nuclear power plant, which currently provides 10% of Finland's electricity. Google will purchase up to 50% of the electricity produced by the plant through 2050. The agreement also includes 629 MW of contracted onshore wind, a 94 MW battery near Kajaani, and demand response capabilities. The investment is expected to support more than 37,000 jobs during construction and boost Finland's GDP by 3.6 billion euros annually. Prime Minister Petteri Orpo stated that the collaboration will deliver lasting benefits for both parties and spur innovation, research, and development.
