Google expands Gemini AI tools to students of all ages within the Classroom app.
Google is rolling out Gemini-powered study aids to students of all ages across its free and paid education plans. The move extends capabilities that were previously reserved for educators, allowing students to access a suite of AI-powered tools inside Google Classroom to help with math problems, writing assignments, and quiz generation. Unlike open-ended model access, Google has scoped the AI’s responses to align with teacher-curated content, which helps mitigate concerns regarding hallucinations and inappropriate content. School administrators retain control over which features are available, though some officials have expressed concerns regarding the rapid pace of automatic updates. For instance, James O’Hagan, director of digital equity, innovation, and library services for the Glendale-River Hills School District, noted that the default should be requiring permission rather than automatic adoption. The integration positions Google in a competitive race against Microsoft and Apple to capture the classroom market. The administration announced that these features are available at no additional cost for Fundamentals, Standard, and Plus editions of Workspace for Education.
