Two pilots were killed when a Hellenic Air Force F-4 Phantom fighter jet crashed during an air show north of Athens. The crash occurred during a low-altitude maneuver at Tanagra Air Force Base during the Athens Flying Week air show on Saturday. The twin-seat fighter jet plunged into the ground, creating a large plume of black smoke and a massive fireball. Rescue crews and 85 firefighters, assisted by 11 water-dropping planes and helicopters, worked to contain the fire. The fire was located at a distance from the spectators, resulting in no injuries among the thousands of people in attendance. Following the crash, organizers canceled the remaining events for the weekend and issued an evacuation order for the area near the base. The Hellenic Air Force declared three days of mourning for the two pilots.
