Kyriakos Mitsotakis Promises Tax Breaks and Pay Hikes to Secure Third Term
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis delivered a keynote speech at the Thessaloniki International Fair, outlining a comprehensive economic plan to secure a third consecutive term in the upcoming national election. The administration announced a package of measures worth over 2 billion euros annually, targeting tax reductions for farmers, self-employed professionals, and large families, alongside permanent pay increases for retirees and public sector workers. Kyriakos Mitsotakis emphasized the need for stability and clear solutions, aiming to reduce the national debt to below 110% of the Gross Domestic Product by 2030. He pledged to increase the average monthly wage to €1,800 and reduce the jobless rate to 6%. To support families, the administration announced a new savings account for every child, with the state depositing money monthly until the child reaches age 18. The speech took place amidst union-led protests involving over 25,000 people. While the country has achieved a budget surplus and economic growth, workers currently have the lowest purchasing power in the European Union. Kyriakos Mitsotakis contrasted his government's fiscal stability with the opposition's promises, noting that the country's debt is now rated at investment grade.
