The Georgia Department of Public Safety reported 216 DUI arrests during the first 36 hours of Labor Day travel. State troopers and officers responded to 95 crashes across the state, resulting in one fatality and 29 injuries. Officials reported that the fatality occurred on South Fulton Parkway when a pedestrian failed to yield to traffic and was struck by a 2016 Lexus RX. The department also issued 183 citations for distracted driving and 324 citations for not wearing seat belts. State troopers and Commercial Vehicle Enforcement officers increased patrols on interstates and secondary roads to address impaired driving, speeding, and seat belt violations. Colonel William W. Hitchens, III, Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Public Safety, encouraged motorists to make safety a priority by buckling up, obeying speed limits, and designating a sober driver.
