At least 31 people were killed and more than 20 injured after a massive mound of rubbish at a major waste site collapsed in the Dar-es-Salam neighborhood of Conakry, Guinea. The disaster occurred in the early hours of Sunday following heavy rain, destroying several homes and leaving 358 people seeking shelter in a nearby school. Prime Minister Mamadou Oury Bah visited the scene to oversee search efforts and ensure medical care for the injured. While the government had previously announced plans to evacuate residents and secure the area, local residents expressed frustration that authorities had not acted sooner to close the dump, which has been a source of pollution for years. Rescue workers are currently using excavators to comb through the debris. The government has been planning to build a new landfill in Coyah to replace the site, which has suffered similar collapses in the past, including a landslide that killed 10 people in 2017.
