Soldiers from the southwest of Niger launched a collective mutiny against officers in the capital, Niamey, triggering hours of sustained gunfire and explosions overnight. The mutiny involved troops from Ouallam, Tera, and Dosso who targeted sensitive sites, including the presidential palace and the Base 101 military airbase. This incident marks the third major unrest event at the airport complex this year, following attacks by Islamic State and al-Qaeda affiliates in January and June. Niger has been under military rule since a July 2023 coup, shifting its focus toward Russian ties and the Alliance of Sahel States.
