Governor Joe Lombardo Declares State of Emergency as Hawk Fire Spreads Across 10,500 Acres in Washoe County

Governor Joe Lombardo declared a state of emergency in Washoe County as the Hawk Fire rapidly expanded to cover more than 10,500 acres on Saturday. The blaze, fueled by gusty winds, low humidity, and dry vegetation, prompted expanded evacuation orders for residents in northwest Reno and the North Valleys. Officials confirmed that structures have already been lost to the fire. Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve urged residents to evacuate immediately, stating that life is more important than a building. The administration directed state agencies to work through the Nevada Emergency Operations Center to supplement local efforts, with approximately 400 personnel from local, state, and federal agencies assigned to the incident. Evacuation zones have expanded to include the Somersett community and neighborhoods north of West Seventh Street. While the University of Nevada, Reno, remains outside the evacuation zone, several downtown hotel-casinos are offering discounted rates for displaced residents. The fire currently has no containment, and crews continue to work overnight to battle the blaze.
