The US Mint launched a $1 coin featuring a portrait of President Donald Trump to celebrate America's 250th anniversary.

The US Mint began selling gold-colored $1 coins featuring the likeness of President Donald Trump on Wednesday. The coins were released to commemorate America's 250th anniversary. While federal law generally prohibits the likeness of a living person from appearing on U.S. currency, a design clause in the Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act of 2020 allowed the administration to overcome this restriction by placing the portrait on the obverse side of the coin. These coins are marketed as collectibles and are not intended for daily circulation, though they remain legal tender. The US Mint reported that a roll of 25 coins costs $61 and a bag of 100 coins sells for $154.50. The coins are composed of a mix of copper, zinc, nickel, and manganese. The administration also revealed that Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent plans to issue a new $250 bill featuring President Trump. This would be the highest denomination bill currently issued, as the $100 bill is currently the highest denomination in circulation.
