King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV of Tooro Kingdom dies at age 34

King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV passed away on August 27, 2026, at the age of 34, after battling aggressive brain cancer in the United States. The monarch of the Tooro Kingdom in western Uganda ascended to the throne in 1995 at just three years old following the death of his father, King Patrick Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III. His early reign was managed under a regency led by his mother, Queen Mother Best Kemigisa, until he assumed full responsibilities in 2010. His remains were received at Entebbe Airport on September 4, 2026, by President Yoweri Museveni and other government officials. The Tooro Prime Minister, Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki, announced that the monarch left behind a prince who will inherit the throne, though the prince's identity remains undisclosed. While the royal family expressed some uncertainty regarding the biological son, the kingdom will follow traditional processes to determine the successor. During his reign, King Oyo championed causes such as youth empowerment, education, environmental conservation, and HIV/AIDS awareness. The kingdom has entered a nine-day mourning period, with the burial scheduled for September 12, 2026.
