A pilot was hospitalized after a World War II-era plane crashed at Heritage Field Airport in Limerick Township on Wednesday evening. The single-engine aircraft, a Harvard 3 variant of the T-6, was manufactured in 1944 and served as a training plane for Allied forces during World War II. The crash occurred at approximately 7:15 p.m. as the plane was attempting to land. The aircraft landed upside down in a grassy area next to the runway, causing a fuel leak. The pilot, who was the sole occupant, was trapped inside the wreckage until airport staff and emergency crews removed him. Limerick Fire Department Chief Ken Shuler stated that the pilot was alert and talking when he was removed from the plane. The pilot was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Limerick Township police are in contact with the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board to investigate the cause of the crash. The airport remained closed Wednesday night while crews addressed the fuel leak and removed the overturned plane.
