Kalle Lappinen Unearths Finland's Largest Viking Age Silver Hoard

Kalle Lappinen, a metal detectorist, discovered Finland's largest Viking Age silver hoard in the town of Sysmä. The collection, which weighs nearly 10 pounds, consists of thousands of pieces of silver jewelry and coins buried in two birch-bark containers approximately 40 feet apart. The hoard dates to between 1000 and 1050 C.E., a period corresponding to the tail end of the Viking Age. Esko Tikkala, an archaeologist at the Lahti City Museums, inspected the find and noted that the coins originated from regions including present-day Germany, Sweden, and Great Britain, as well as the Islamic world.
