Tropical Storm Marie forces evacuations in Long Beach as powerful waves batter the coastline
California homeowners were forced to flee their properties on Monday as powerful waves from Tropical Storm Marie battered the Long Beach Peninsula. Long Beach Fire Department officials went door-to-door to notify residents of approximately 20 homes along the seawall between 63rd Place and 67th Place to evacuate because the seawall was compromised. Building officials were dispatched to assess the structural integrity of the houses as waves repeatedly surged over the seawall, pushing water and sand into coastal neighborhoods. The storm caused damage to the nearby boardwalk and cracked concrete between properties. Several inches of water and sand spilled into the area over the weekend, and sand berms designed to protect the communities disintegrated. Long Beach Fire Battalion Chief Jake Heflin stated that officials must conduct a real assessment of the boardwalk and waterfront infrastructure to determine how to reinforce the area for future storms. Long Beach Mayor Rex Richardson warned that the damage could be a preview of coastal threats ahead. A Coastal Flood Advisory and a High Surf Advisory remain in effect through 11 p.m. Tuesday.
