President Claudia Shein-baum Pardo reported that the annual rate of willful homicides in Mexico has decreased by 49% compared to the previous six years. The daily average of murders dropped from 86.9 in September 2024 to 40.8 in August 2026. Marcela Figueroa, head of the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System, stated that crime rates decreased by 53% nationwide. She noted that Guanajuato led the country in illicit activity during August. Figueroa also reported that high-impact crimes decreased by 39% from an average of 636.6 per day to 391. The administration highlighted that the reduction in murders is linked to a strategy addressing the underlying causes of crime. This included working with 40 municipalities to rescue young people at risk of joining criminal groups. Secretary of Security and Protection of the Citizen, Omar Garcia Harfuch, reported that 67,253 people have been arrested for high-impact crimes. Additionally, the government secured 34,353 firearms, 80% of which originated from the United States.
