This charge follows the imposition of the national security law by Beijing. Prosecutors stated that Wong called for international sanctions through newspapers and media outlets and met with foreign politicians, including former US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi and current Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Wong is currently serving a nearly five-year sentence for subversion and was scheduled for release next year. The new charge of foreign collusion is punishable by three to 10 years, or up to life imprisonment if the offense is deemed to be of a grave nature. Wong co-founded the pro-democracy political party Demosisto, which disbanded in 2020. He first gained prominence as a student leader during the 2014 Occupy Movement.
