President Trump Awards Welles Crowther the Presidential Medal of Freedom for 9/11 Heroism

President Trump presented the Presidential Medal of Freedom to the mother of Welles Crowther during a ceremony at the White House. Crowther, a volunteer firefighter and equity trader, was known as the "man in the red bandana" for using a cloth to cover his face while guiding approximately 18 strangers to safety from the 78th floor of the World Trade Center's south tower. He made three separate trips to rescue victims before the building collapsed and he was killed. During the ceremony, President Trump highlighted the sacrifice of first responders and compared the danger they faced to the current war with Iran. He also noted that Crowther's acts of heroism made him more famous than himself. The event featured a 21-foot steel beam from the World Trade Center that traveled across the country to serve as an educational tool. President Trump will skip the main 25th anniversary memorial ceremony at Ground Zero on Friday to deliver remarks at the Pentagon instead.
