Robert Seitz arrested for transporting 25 horses bound for slaughter through New York state

A Pennsylvania truck driver, Robert Seitz, was arrested for violating a New York state law that bans the sale and transport of horses for slaughter. State police stopped Seitz on Route 11 in the town of DeKalb on Wednesday morning, where he was hauling 25 horses destined for a slaughterhouse in Quebec, Canada. This arrest marks the first time the 2024 law has been enforced. The horses were sourced from Rotz’s Livestock in Shippensburg, Pennsylvania. The arrest followed a joint investigation by several organizations, including Animals’ Angels, the New York State Humane Association, and the office of State Senator Dan Stec. These groups provided a tip to state police regarding the transport. The 25 horses were seized and moved to a veterinary clinic in Saratoga County for evaluation and care. The driver was issued an appearance ticket for DeKalb Town Court. The law, signed by Governor Kathy Hochul in December 2023, prohibits the sale, purchase, possession, or transport of horses when the intent is slaughter for human consumption.
