Soldier Neiver Madera Ricardo was killed during a drone attack in the municipality of Abrego, North Santander, on August 15, 2026. The National Army reported that more than nine explosive devices were launched by drones, presumably by members of the ELN Front Carlos Armando Cacua Guerrero. The attack targeted troops from the Light Cavalry Group N.° 7, resulting in the death of Neiver Madera Ricardo and leaving five other soldiers injured. An armored vehicle used for civilian protection was also affected by the explosives. Following the incident, the National Army reinforced security in the sector with support from the Aviation of the National Army and the Colombian Aerospace Force. President Abelardo de la Espriella rejected the attack, describing the ELN as a "narcoterrorist" group and stating that the action would cost the group dearly. Meanwhile, trade unions and human rights defenders expressed concern over the impact on the local hospital, which was subjected to the other side of the armed conflict while fulfilling its medical mission.
