The General Services Administration begins charging federal agencies for use of the USAi artificial intelligence platform.

The General Services Administration (GSA) has transitioned the USAi artificial intelligence platform from a free service to a paid model for federal agencies. According to an update on the GSA website, the platform now requires a platform fee plus passthrough usage costs.

Previously, the GSA provided USAi at no cost to allow agencies to experiment with artificial intelligence capabilities without maintaining duplicative platforms. The GSA planned to move to a cost-recoverable model as part of its fiscal year 2027 budget document. Zach Whitman, chief data scientist and chief AI officer at the GSA, stated that the trial period helped determine the value of the platform for agencies. The GSA is working to understand the return on investment for agencies to ensure a staffed program office can support a high-quality product. Other AI offerings through OneGov deals, including ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude, are expiring at the end of this month. The GSA is currently working with manufacturers to secure extensions or new offers for these services.
