President Trump orders the renaming of Lake Ontario to Lake America for U.S. users
The administration announced an executive order renaming Lake Ontario to Lake America for the United States. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum stated that President Trump reached out directly to Apple to request the name change. Apple and Google have both updated their maps to display Lake America for U.S. users, while maintaining the Lake Ontario name for users in Canada and other regions. This change occurs during an ongoing trade war with Canada, which has seen both nations hike tariffs on each other. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Ontario Premier Doug Ford rejected the name change, noting that the name Lake Ontario predates both the U.S. Declaration of Independence and the Canadian Confederation. While Apple and Google have updated their maps, MapQuest has decided not to change the lake's label, offering users an option to name the lake themselves. President Trump also renamed the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America last year, which was also adopted by Apple and Google maps.
