Sanjay Mehrotra identifies memory as the strategic infrastructure of the artificial intelligence era during Boise expansion

Sanjay Mehrotra, CEO of Micron, stated that memory has become the strategic infrastructure of the artificial intelligence era, permanently resetting the economics of the cyclical semiconductor industry. Speaking from a fabrication site near the company's headquarters in Boise, Idaho, Mehrotra highlighted that AI systems require significant memory to function, shifting the industry from a commodity-based model to one where memory is vital for overall system performance. Micron is currently executing a $250 billion investment plan in U.S. manufacturing and research, which includes the construction of two new fabrication plants in Boise. These facilities are expected to be operational by 2027. The administration announced that these investments will help position Boise as a global center for memory innovation. Mayor Lauren McLean noted that the investment will create a new influx of jobs, allowing local students to remain in Idaho for their careers. The expansion is expected to create over 17,000 new jobs in the area, while the administration also addressed the need for improved housing and transportation infrastructure to support the rapid population growth and economic boom in the region.
