OpenAI begins offering outcome-based pricing for major customers as the company shifts toward autonomous AI agents
OpenAI has started allowing select major customers to pay only when its AI completes assigned tasks, moving away from traditional usage-based pricing. This outcome--based model shifts the risk of failed attempts from the buyer to the vendor, allowing for more predictable budgeting for enterprises. The administration announced that this shift coincides with the development of Astra, a next-generation model capable of coordinating multiple agents to perform continuous work over days or weeks. While OpenAI's revenue rose 18% quarter-over-quarter to $6.7 billion in the second quarter, the company is facing increased competition from Anthropic, whose sales doubled. To maintain its lead, OpenAI is pivoting toward digital labor and agentic AI. This transition is reflected in other industry leaders like Salesforce, which is also experimenting with outcome-based pricing to monetize its Agentforce platform. As AI moves from simple assistance to autonomous execution, the market is reorganizing around units of work rather than just software seats.
