Wang Xingxing Predicts Humanoid Robots May Need Up to a Decade to Reach a Major Breakthrough
Unitree Robotics founder Wang Xingxing stated that humanoid robots may require five to 10 years to achieve a 'ChatGPT moment,' a breakthrough where a robot can complete 80% of tasks in an unfamiliar home using only voice or text commands. Speaking at the World Robot Conference in Beijing, Wang Xingxing noted that while investor enthusiasm is high, current robots still lack the ability to generalize across different tasks and environments. He highlighted that perfecting the precision of robot movements remains a primary challenge, as robots currently struggle with the final millimeters of motion. To address this, Unitree is pursuing a 'self-evolving development loop' where AI models write and test control code. The conference underscored a shift in the industry from viral stunts to pragmatic, real-world applications. Experts noted that the next test for embodied AI is whether technological advances can translate into economic returns that justify large-scale deployment in sectors like manufacturing and healthcare.
