A drone and a weather balloon caused hundreds of flight delays at San Diego International Airport on Friday.

San Diego International Airport experienced significant flight delays on Friday afternoon after a drone and a weather balloon were spotted in the immediate vicinity around 2 p.m. The Federal Aviation Administration temporarily paused arrivals and departures, resulting in delays of approximately two hours for many flights. By 5 p.m., more than 400 flights had been delayed at the airport. Airport officials confirmed that the objects were identified as a drone and a weather balloon. The weather balloon was a stratospheric cell tower undergoing testing by a US aerospace and materials science company. The Federal Aviation Administration reported an all-clear by 4:30 p.m., and operations resumed. TSA law enforcement is currently investigating the drone activity. The Federal Aviation Administration advises drone operators to receive airspace authorization before flying near airports, as it can be difficult for manned aircraft to see and avoid drones. The delays occurred as travel for the Labor Day weekend began.
