Hungary Orders 10 Russian Diplomats to Leave Country Following Unacceptable Activities

Hungary has ordered 10 members of the Russian mission to leave the country. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Anita Orban stated that the individuals engaged in activities that were unacceptable for diplomats under the Vienna Convention. Orban noted that the order was intended to protect Hungary’s security and sovereignty. She clarified that the decision does not imply Hungary is breaking off diplomatic relations with Russia, as the country intends to continue necessary dialogue. The Russian Foreign Ministry vowed to provide an appropriate response to the expulsions. European Commission spokesperson Christian Wigand stated that the EU takes note of Hungary’s legitimate decision, noting that the move was an expected response to Russia’s persistent campaign of hybrid attacks against the EU and its member states.
