May Doi, a 93-year-old former school teacher, has been identified as the first known fatality from Tropical Cyclone Lala on the Big Island. The victim lived alone in the rural town of Nāʻālehu and was located by fire crews and police after being reported as a missing person. Hawaiʻi County temporary fire chief Daniel Volpe confirmed that while initial searches were difficult due to limited access, specialized rescue teams and the National Guard assisted in locating her. Hawaiʻi County Police Chief Reed Mahuna stated that while the death is believed to be a result of the disaster, police will continue to investigate the circumstances. Hawaiʻi County Mayor Kimo Alameda expressed sympathy for the loss, noting that the small community of Nāʻālehu is coming together to grieve. Meanwhile, utility crews continue to work to restore power to approximately 33,600 customers across Hawaii, with Hawaiian Electric reporting that 86% of impacted customers have had their power restored as of Tuesday evening.
