Northern Indiana Residents Endure Ninth Day of Power Outages Following Severe Storms

Tens of thousands of residents in northwest Indiana are currently in survival mode as they endure a ninth day without power following a deadly storm on August 11. Northern Indiana Public Service Co. (NIPSCO) reported that 68,000 customers remain without electricity, with many residents in Gary and East Chicago facing significant disruptions to daily life. The utility has restored power to 306,500 others since the storm, but full restoration is not expected until Tuesday in some areas. Local residents, including hair stylist Shatiya Hardin, noted that patience is wearing thin as families manage spoiled food and closed schools. Meanwhile, a new class-action lawsuit has been filed against NIPSCO, alleging the utility failed to properly manage trees and vegetation near power lines, contributing to the widespread outages. In central Ohio, heavy rains also caused flash flooding in Columbus, where Mayor Andrew Ginther reported that emergency crews rescued motorists and a 12-year-old boy from high water. The storm's impact continues to disrupt the start of the school year for thousands of children across the region.
