Guillaume Meyer creates open-source tool to remove invisible AI watermarks from text and images
Guillaume Meyer, a Paris-based tech founder, has developed an open-source project called "Watermarks Remover" to address the challenges posed by AI-generated content. The tool was created in response to the announcement that Anthropic would add an invisible watermark to its Claude system, a move intended to comply with European Union regulations. Meyer argues that while watermarking is a useful regulatory tool, the current statistical method can lead to false positives. For instance, he noted that using AI-based proofreading tools like Grammarly could result in a human-written text being labeled as entirely AI-generated. To solve this, Meyer's tool generates slight variations of text while preserving meaning until the watermark is disrupted. The project has gained significant traction online, with Meyer aiming to eventually turn the technical tool into a commercial business. He emphasizes that the goal is not to impersonate others, but to provide a way for users to manage their own content and understand the impact of AI on the information ecosystem.
