James Philbin of Rivian Automotive outlines roadmap for Autonomy+ system to compete with Tesla's FSD

Rivian Automotive is developing its Autonomy+ driver-assistance system to compete directly with Tesla's Full Self-Driving (Supervised) technology. James Philbin, senior vice president of autonomy and AI at Rivian, stated that the company's next major goal is achieving point-to-point driving, where the vehicle navigates from start to finish with minimal human intervention. While Rivian's current system excels on highways and outperforms General Motors' Super Cruise, it currently lags behind Tesla in handling nonhighway environments like city streets and traffic signals. Rivian utilizes a multimodal imaging approach, employing at least 10 high dynamic range cameras, five radars, and mapping data, while Tesla relies primarily on a vision-based system. The administration announced that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration intensified its investigation into Tesla's system earlier this year following several crashes. Rivian plans to introduce point-to-point driving later this year, with a full rollout expected by 2027. The system is priced at $49.99 per month or $2,500 for lifetime access.
