Mexico's Claudia Sheibaum Dismisses Return of Rubén Rocha Moya to Sinaloa Governorship

The move follows accusations from the U.S. Department of Justice that Rocha Moya participated in a scheme to facilitate drug trafficking in the state. Financial analysts suggest that Rocha Moya's continued tenure as governor could have complicated banking operations, as his status on the List of Blocked Persons by the Financial Intelligence Unit would have required banks to evaluate every transaction involving his direct signature. Simultaneously, citizens and business leaders, led by the deputy Paola Gárate Valenzuela, have submitted a formal request for an impeachment trial against Rocha Moya. The request outlines 16 specific facts, including alleged instances of political repression during the 2021 elections. The Sinaloa Congress is currently tasked with defining an interim governor while the legislative body reviews the legal requirements for the impeachment proceedings.
