IBM Unveils First Dual-Architecture Mainframe Processor to Integrate Arm Software Ecosystem

IBM announced the first dual-architecture mainframe processor, designed to allow enterprises to run Arm-native Linux environments alongside traditional z/OS and Linux on IBM Z systems. The new chip, built on a -nanometer process node, features 11 high-performance cores that can natively execute both IBM's own instruction set and Arm's instructions concurrently. This engineering feat allows organizations to run mission-critical transaction processing and the vast Arm software ecosystem—including modern AI frameworks—on the same silicon without sacrificing the reliability and scale of the mainframe. Christian Jacobi, Chief Technology Officer at IBM Systems Development, noted that the processor enables a seamless switch between architectures in nanoseconds. By integrating Arm natively rather than as a separate subsystem, the chip provides 100% binary compatibility for Arm Linux binaries. The processor also features on-chip AI inference accelerators for fraud detection and a second-generation Spyre AI accelerator for larger enterprise workloads. The new chip will debut in the successor to the z17, with a full system launch expected around 2028.
