Carlos Tellez Sanchez, a 35-year-old Venezuelan man, was deported to Liberia, West Africa, after living in the United States for several years. Despite having an immigration judge grant him protection from being sent back to Venezuela, the administration announced that he was removed to a Liberia as a safe third country. This move follows a record number of arrests by ICE during the administration's crackdown on illegal immigration. Tellez Sanchez, who entered the U.S. illegally in 2021, worked in Dallas and had no criminal record. The Department of Homeland Security stated that Tellez Sanchez refused several opportunities to be removed to Mexico, necessitating the move to a third country. The administration announced that while illegal immigrants who choose to go home are given a free flight and a $3,000 check, those who refuse their home country, the administration announced that they must be sent to a secure nation. Tellez Sanchez is now staying in a hotel in a remote area of Liberia, nearly 6,000 miles from his family in Texas.
