U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement is set to deploy a fleet of Boston Dynamics Spot robots to assist in mass deportation campaigns and infrastructure security. The agency placed a $2 million order for the robots, which are designed to operate in hazardous environments where human agents may face risks, such as gas detection and search and rescue. These robots feature 360-degree cameras and extendable arms, allowing them to perform inspections and provide situational awareness in confined or unstable areas. While the robots can perform various tasks, a Boston Dynamics spokesperson clarified that any attempted weaponization of the technology is strictly prohibited. The technology is already utilized by the Secret Service and various police departments across the country. This procurement follows a separate $16 million investment by the Department of Homeland Security to provide electric shock gloves to officers nationwide. The robots will primarily serve to enhance officer safety and improve operational decision-making during complex missions.
