IDScan Confirms Data Breach Involving Over 150 Million Driver's Licenses

IDScan, a Louisiana-based identity verification company, confirmed that an unauthorized third party accessed and copied customer information from its cloud systems. The breach involved the theft of driver's licenses for approximately 153 million people in the United States and Canada. The stolen data includes full names, driver's license numbers, and other government-issued identification numbers, such as passports and ID cards. Cybersecurity journalist Brian Krebs first reported the breach after discovering a dark web marketplace called Nexus, which offered scans of the stolen documents for sale. Krebs verified the authenticity of the data by examining his own record and identifying high-profile individuals, such as U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, among the compromised records. The FBI's New Orleans field office is currently investigating the incident. IDScan stated that while full access to the stolen information required payment, the company is notifying potentially affected individuals and providing free credit monitoring and identity protection services. The company is cooperating with federal law enforcement to determine the full scope of the breach.
