Imran Khan returned to prison after government declares him medically fit following Supreme Court order

Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan was returned to his cell at Adiala jail early Friday morning after a medical examination deemed him "medically fit." The 73-year-old politician, who has been imprisoned since August 2023, underwent a review by a team of qualified doctors, including an ophthalmologist and a cardiologist. While the Supreme Court had ordered Imran Khan to be transferred to Shifa International Hospital for treatment, the administration announced that he was instead examined at the state-run Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences. Information Minister Attaullah Tarar stated that the switch was necessary due to security concerns caused by PTI workers. However, Imran Khan's political party, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, disputed the government's account, claiming the move was a symbolic exercise and a violation of the court's order. The examination occurred while his sister, Uzma Khan, was present. Despite the court's mandate for hospital stay, Imran Khan was moved back to prison by 5 a.m. Friday, sparking potential outrage among supporters who had gathered in large numbers to witness his medical check-up.
