Daniel Janzen and Winnie Hallwachs successfully transformed a deforested pasture in Costa Rica into a lush forest by using orange peel and pulp waste from a juice company. The project began in 1998, with approximately 1,000 truckloads of waste totaling over 12,000 metric tons deposited on the land. Research published in the Restoration Ecology journal showed a 176 percent increase in aboveground biomass within the 3-hectare area. The site became a vibrant ecosystem featuring two dozen species of vegetation, including a massive giant fig tree and a variety of wildlife such as sloths, monkeys, and crocodiles. The researchers noted that the difference between the barren site and the neighboring wasteland was primarily the orange peel deposit. The team aims to use this data to provide better information on waste management, encouraging companies to work with restorationists to ensure waste disposal is scientifically driven rather than random.
