During the summit, Xi Jinping engaged in a diplomatic push to expand China's influence in Central Asia and West Asia. China-Central Asia goods trade reached a record US$106 billion last year, with Beijing becoming the largest trading partner for the five countries combined for the first time. The summit also featured other influential leaders, including Russian President Vladimir Putin and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. While Modi delivered a message on terrorism, Putin appeared to snub Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
