Ron DeSantis Announces Removal of License Plate Reader Cameras from Florida State Highways
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced that the state will revoke all law enforcement license-plate-recognition camera permits on state highways, with all such cameras to be removed by the end of September. The move aims to address growing public concerns regarding privacy and the potential for abuse in a digital surveillance state. While the cameras are effective tools for crime-fighting, many local law enforcement agencies across Florida are pausing or reevaluating their programs while awaiting legislative guidance. State Representative Michelle Salzman noted that lawmakers may soon introduce legislation to establish clear rules regarding who can use the technology, who can access the data, and where the cameras can be placed. The Florida Department of Transportation has already begun the process of revoking permits, giving agencies 30 days to remove the cameras. In some areas, such as Escambia County, law enforcement has already ceased operations of the network. Other regions, like Fort Walton Beach, have decided to keep their cameras operational on non-state property for the time being.
