Indiana Supreme Court declares Spencer Deery the winner of Republican primary for State Senate District 23

The Indiana Supreme Court ruled on Thursday that state Senator Spencer Deery won the Republican primary for State Senate District 23 by a margin of three votes. The court's decision ended a months-long recount process following the May primary, where Deery initially appeared to win with 6,335 votes to challenger Paula Copenhaver's 6,332 votes. During the recount, the Indiana Recount Commission initially threw out six ballots cast for Deery because they lacked county clerk signatures or stamps. This move briefly gave Copenhaver a three-vote lead. However, the court overturned this decision, ruling that state law allows ballots to be counted if the defect was caused by an election official rather than the voter. Deery was one of the Republican state senators who voted against the administration's proposed congressional map for Indiana. The administration endorsed Copenhaver as a challenger to unseat those who voted against the redistricting push. Deery is now the Republican nominee for the general election, where he will face Democrat David Sanders and independent Joshua Brant.
