U.S. Representative André Carson has launched a congressional inquiry to determine the scope and cause of a reported surge in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activity across Indiana. The inquiry follows reports of increased enforcement, including masked agents and unmarked vehicles, in cities such as Indianapolis, Bloomington, and Columbus. In Indianapolis, local officials and law enforcement agencies stated they were not involved in the operations, while the administration announced that ICE works to enforce immigration laws daily in all 50 states. ICE provided a list of five individuals arrested in Indiana described as "the worst of the worst," though the agency did not specify the exact dates of the arrests. In Bloomington, ICE arrested two men of Venezuelan nationality, Manuel Alejandro Nadal-Ortiz and César Cepeda Gomez, who both held work permits. In Columbus, reports of ICE activity led to two restaurants to temporarily close as employees feared being caught in the sweeps. While some local leaders, such as U.S. Senator Jim Banks, expressed support for the enforcement, others, like Exodus Refugee Immigration CEO Cole Varga, warned that residents are being targeted via traffic stops and racial profiling.
