Gastelum, who had over 500,000 TikTok followers, was dressed as a food delivery worker and participating in a social media challenge with two friends when a motorcycle driver fired a gun at him. Security Minister Omar Garcia Harfuch reported that during the arrest operation, police officers were attacked by three armed individuals, resulting in the death of one officer. Authorities seized three firearms, ammunition, and vehicles at the scene. Preliminary investigations indicate that the killing of Cesar Gastelum was related to his social media posts alluding to a faction of the Sinaloa Cartel. Culiacan is a known center for narco-culture, where influencers are frequently targeted by criminal gangs for intimidation or score-settling. In recent years, around a dozen influencers have been killed in the region.
