Mexico Begins 2026-2027 School Year for Over 24 Million Students This Monday

More than 24 million students in Mexico are resuming academic activities this Monday, August 31, for the 2026-2027 school year. The Public Education Secretariat (SEP) established the official calendar, which applies to public primary and secondary schools, private schools incorporated into the system, and teacher training institutions across 32 entities. The school year consists of 185 days of activities, concluding on July 9, 2027. Teachers returned to school first during an intensive phase from August 24 to 28, 2026, preceding the student return. The calendar includes two main vacation periods: winter break from December 21, 2026, to January 6, 2027, and Holy Week from March 22, 2027, to April 2, 2027. Additionally, the calendar marks specific dates for grade registration and technical council meetings. In Mexico City, the return to classes is expected to cause significant traffic congestion on main streets and avenues, particularly during morning hours as students and educators return to classrooms.
