Israel stated the objective was to create a buffer zone on the Lebanese side of the border. During the invasion, over one million civilians were displaced. Although the U.S. brokered a ceasefire this summer, Israel has continued to seize territory and destroy villages since that time. Lebanese residents have not been allowed to return to their homes. Israel now occupies almost six percent of the border territory of Lebanon.
